One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

“One flew over the Cuckoos Nest” is about a criminal named R.P McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) who is sent to a mental hospital for convincing the guards at the prison that he is crazy (Which he is faking that he’s crazy). While he’s at the hospita;l he begins to go against Hospital rules and the head nurse (Louise Fletcher) begins to pull a few strings to make McMurphy and the hospital patients who followed him, suffer for all the rules that McMurphy has broken.

Jack Nicholson’s performance in the film is probably one of the best films he’s ever done. I mean we’ve seen him in comic and crazy roles in films like "Batman" and "The Shining"; and we’ve also seen him in serious roles like in "Chinatown" and "As Good As It Gets", but in this film he has a mixture of being funny and serious. I mean he played the part so well, that he’s one of the reasons why the films so enjoyable. Another person who is great in this film is Louise Fletcher’s role as Nurse Ratched. The reason why she is so good is because she has the most evil look on her face, in most scenes she always looks sour or bitter. It’s not just the looks that amazed me, but also the way she acts; like in scenes where she orders some of the patients around, and instead of just yelling at them she speaks to them in a calm but cruel way.

You won’t just recognize Jack Nicholson or Louise Fletcher in the film you’ll also recognize some of the supporting actors who played the patients in the film such as Danny Devito (Who played the voice of Phil in “Disney’s Hercules” or as Louie De Palma from the show “Taxi”) as Martini, Christopher Lloyd (Who Played Doc Brown in “Back To The Future” or as Judge Doom in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”) as Taber, Sydney Lassick (Who Played MR. Fromm in “Carrie”) as Charlie Cheswick, Scatman Crothers (Who Played Dick Hallorann in “The Shining” or in “Disney’s AristoCATS” as Scat Cat, The cat who sang “Everybody Wants To Be A Cat”) as the night watchman Mr. Turkle, and Brad Dourif (Who played the voice of the Killer Doll Chucky) as Billy Bibbit. The casting and the acting in the film is wonderful not to mention that some of those supporting actors are making their film debut. They all fit their roles so well they come off as realistic as the film depicts them to be.

The score is wonderful and a little strange at the same time, and the directing and the cinematography is perfect. There are also scenes in the movie that made me laugh or smile like in the scene where he teaches a deaf and dumb man (Will Sampson, who also is the founder of the American Indian Registry for the Performing Arts) how to play basketball, pretends to watch the World Series with the patients, and the scene where he takes the patients fishing, those are really wonderful moments. There are also some really disturbing scenes in the film as well to add to its realistic and dramatic tone and the film does indeed have one of the saddest endings to ever be put on film.

“One Flew over the Cuckoos” is indeed a wonderful film.

 I give this film a 5/5
