The Cat in the Hat (Mike Myers)

After the success of Jim Carrey’s version of the Grinch, another Dr Seuss movie was made. This movie is based on Dr Seuss’s classic book called “The Cat In The Hat”. It’s basically the same story, it’s about two kids named Conrad (Spencer Breslin) and Sally (Dakota Fanning) who sit in the house with nothing to do, but then a Cat in the hat (Mike Myers) and his 2 things come to the house and show the kids how to have a good time, but the kids pet fish (Voiced by Sean Hayes, who also plays an OCD company owner) tells the Cat to get out because he’s wrecking the house and now the Cat has to clean the house before the kids mother comes home. With a good plot and a good cast how could this be bad?

Well, first off, its a family movie, but there’s too much dirty humor and language in it. Now in every Family movie, there’s going to be some kind of adult content, but this movie is chunk full of it; for example the cat is holding a gardening hoe and says to it “Dirty Hoe!” then apologizes to it by saying “I’m sorry baby, I love you” and try’s to lick it, why do you want to put something like that in a family film? There's also that unnecessary scene when the cat cuts off his tail and screams "Son Of A..." and then is bleeped. Mike, you're playing the warm hearted cat in the hat, not someone from your SNL sketches.  There’s also a lot of unnecessary gross humor in the movie as well. His things are very annoying and most of the time, I just want to kill them.

If you think this is bad listen to this, Alec Baldwin plays a nasty next door neighbor who wants to send the kids to Military school and marry their mom. His character and performance in the film is just awful, I’m sure a lot of Alec Baldwin fans will be very displeased by his performance in this film. Then there's the mom played by Kelly Preston, who gives a really corny performance. There's also a babysitter played by Amy Hill who's so unfunny that you can run the film without her. The kids are really good actors and do a good job performing as their characters, but sadly they don't save the film.

The special effects in the movie were good like when the house gets taken over by the mother of all messes, the art direction and the set designs are nice and the Music Score of the film has the sound that you would want to hear in a Dr. Seuss movie, but the make-up design for the cat could have been a lot better. The only explanation why the film has a lot good special effects and art direction than a good family film is because the film is directed by a set direction artist who’s never directed an actual movie before, to me it sounds like the director Bo Welch (Who was nominated for 4 Oscars for Set direction and art direction) focused more on the art than he did with the film.

This movie isn’t a family movie at all, this is more of a comedy spoof on "The Cat in the Hat”. This movie should have gotten an imminent PG-13 rating instead of a PG rating. I can only recommend this film to people who like Mike Myers, because I thought Mike Myers was funny in this film, despite looking scary and having him laugh after almost every joke. If you’re a fan of the book or the mini cartoon version this movie is definitely not for you. My rating for this film is a 2/5 and Mr. Welch, please stick with your first job.

Note: I re-rated this film in this review.
