NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
I don't do this anymore, but these past reviews I just posted were reviews I did in 2009 and at the end of the year, I choose which ones I loved the most. Enjoy this old post.
Here are my top ten movies and TV programs that I reviewed this year
NUMBER 10
As unrealistic as the film is, it still has its moments. Yes, the story and writing isn’t so great, and usually films like this don’t usually make it on my top ten list; however, there are many great songs in this film like “Smooth Criminal", "Man in the Mirror", "Speed Demon", "Leave Me Alone" and "Come Together”. Also there’s a montage segment of music videos of Michael Jackson from his start in the Jackson 5 to when he became a success. There are also some good special effects in the film, but can also be cheesy a couple of times. Also celebrities like Joe Pesci and Sean Lennon (John Lennon’s son) also participated in this film. This film is kind of like one of the Beatles unrealistic, but magical movies (Like Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery tour) only this is Michael Jackson. I’m sure fans of Michael Jackson will like this movie and I’m sure kids will like this movie as well. This is also one of those films I like to watch in memory of Michael Jackson.
NUMBER 9
With great pictures; Interviews with celebrities and agents; an interview with former gangster Henry Hill; Great movies that are shown in the documentary; and real wired tape recordings of gangsters; how could a fan of gangster movies or a person who is interested about reading about gangsters say no to this documentary?
NUMBER 8
With interviews of Broadway stars; rare clips from the Tony’s; and seeing pictures of the original playbills, a person who loves Broadway should love this program.
NUMBER 7
You’ll find a lot of great action sequences in this movie as well as a great music score and excellent directing. This also started the famous dollars trilogy; and this is one of the films that made Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone (Director) popular.
NUMBER 6
Now in today’s standards the film is probably not that frightening, but back then you’d be surprised how much the film scared people, including little kids, they even had to censor a few parts from the film because some of the images in the film were disturbing. Not only was the film scary, but it also left us all a big impact on popular culture, which followed sequels like “The Bride of Frankenstein”, and "Son Of Frankenstein; parody’s like “Abbott and Costello meets Frankenstein” and “Young Frankenstein”; and the famous line “It’s Alive, It’s Alive!”
NUMBER 5
This probably one of the best documentaries I ever I saw on Walt Disney. It talks about how he started out; what new things he did for animation; and it also tells you what he’s like with his family. It also shows his home videos; interviews of people he worked with and his family; and what his studio, theme parks, homes etc etc look like today.
NUMBER 4
After this movie came out, a lot of people were afraid to go into the water, and some were even afraid to go into their own bathtub. I’m not sure if it still scares people today, but the film was one of the hit thrillers in the 70s. What makes the film really terrifying is we don’t see the shark until the movie's half over; if we saw the shark in the beach scenes then it probably wouldn’t be that scary. It’s the mind that makes the movie thrilling as we hear the dark score by John Williams, and we see through the shark's eyes to make it heart beatingly thrilling. When we finally do see the shark, it’s still scary, especially in a scene where we actually see the shark eat one of the guys on the boat; they even used real shark footage in a couple of scenes. This film is a fun and thrilling movie to watch at the same time, It’s also one of the films that made Spielberg famous; it has memorable quotes in the film like “We’re gonna need a bigger boat”; and left another big impact on pop culture because we’ve seen parodies of the movie in both T.V., and film. "Jaws" also became a ride at Universal Studios and a part of the Universal Studios Hollywood tour. One final note, the Author of the book, Peter Benchaly, made a cameo appearance in this film.
NUMBER 3
This film was very touching and very moving. The acting in this film is so wonderful that it can almost make you cry and at times bring a smile to your face. The directing, the music score and set design are excellent in this movie. The film is also thrilling because at different times in the film either a burglar or the green troops would break into the building, and you see Peter's cat moving around and it makes you worried that the cat might make a sound. This film is very emotional to the core.
NUMBER 2
This Romantic Comedy really does show you a lot about Shakespeare’s time and life in the Elizabethan theater only in a comic and romanticized way. The Love between Shakespeare and Viola is beautiful and funny in this film, and is close enough to make you laugh and cry. The acting, the set designs, the costume, the music and the directing is great. This film also won Seven Oscars, including best picture. The only Oscar the film didn’t get is best Director, and if it did win that award along with the other awards, the film would have been the 4th film to win all every major Academy Awards.
NUMBER 1
This movie is awesome; it’s funny, emotional, and disturbing. Jack Nicholson and Louise fetcher’s performance in the film is fantastic. If it wasn’t for them the film probably wouldn’t be that enjoyable. Even celebrities like Brad Dourif, Christopher Lloyd, Danny Devito, Scatman Crothers and other supporting actors also helped make this film a classic that it is today. The directing and the score is another important contribution to why the film is great. Since the story takes place in a mental hospital, believe it or not the film was actually filmed in one and some of the patients that you will see in the film are actual patients. This film is also the second film to win every major Academy Award including best picture.
Well, everybody have a happy new decade and keep tuning in to read my upcoming reviews. Thanks for reading them this year!!!
