CONEHEADS THE MOVIE

 coneheads.jpg

The Coneheads, who could forget this classic SNL skit about an alien family with cone shaped heads, who live on earth with their odd behaviors? I couldn't and nor can SNL fans forget them. It was a solid casted skit, had great humor, the family was both funny and interesting and the stupid human beings (Except a few) thought they were French instead of being aliens, even if their heads were big and pointy. As time went by and after the success of "The Blues Brothers" and "Wayne's World", Hollywood decided to take this short skit that lasted a few minutes into a full length movie.

The plot is actually the plot that you'd expect in a Coneheads sketch and to be honest it isn't that good enough for a full length movie. I just talked about the skit so lets just get to the review.

We have two former SNL cast members Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin and while it's nice seeing them reprise their role and seeing them try to make it work, it still comes off as a fail to make me laugh. When you hear them talk like Aliens, it's funny at first but then when you get past 8 minutes of screen time with them, it just gets annoying and unfunny as the film plays on. On top of it, the movie is not focused on their humor and charm that they brought to the skit, it's all just seeing how many visual jokes that they can fit into this movie since they have a budget. To make one thing clear, the visual jokes aren't funny and doesn't feel needed, it feels forced and is just hoping the special effects will make you laugh. Oh and their emotional moments that they have were so corny, so unemotional, so not needed that it only makes the film even more bland then it already is.

The supporting cast has great comedic actors and current SNL members at the time but none of them give a funny performance. Michael McKean and David Spade as the INS agents, are not funny, not fun villains and are just plain dull. Chris Farley as the boyfriend to the Conehead's daughter, feels like he's holding back his comedic talent than being flat out funny. Cameos from Sinbad, Adam Sandler, Michael Richards, Drew Carey, Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz and Ellen DeGeneres are all not funny, look like their waiting for a check, holding back their talent and are just pointless. As for Michelle Burke as the daughter Connie, is not only not trying (nor does the film) to be funny but to make her a regular girl while being raised by an Alien family is not only stupid but it makes her boring. The only some what cool concept that the film shows is the planet where our main characters come from, however, they show very little of it (Perhaps not having the budget to show more since they probably spent most of their budget on the pointless visual jokes throughout the movie) and the creature that lurks there was kind of cool at first but now thinking back at it, it wasn't anything special. Oh and the ending and how they go back to Earth is so stupid, so cliche, and so corny that I felt gypped at the end.

If you want to see the Coneheads the proper way, check out the SNL skits where they truly shine than a movie that wears out the comedy and focuses more on special effects, cameos and visuals than an actual story that feels like watching a bunch of their skits mixed into one movie with boring subplots.

RATING 1/5
