A CHRISTMAS STORY

Here's the Christmas film that most of us all know and love and what many consider to be one of the best Christmas films of all time. I'm talking about...

The film takes place in the 40's during Christmas time and is narrated by Jean Shepherd. An off screen adult named Ralphie looks back at his childhood and reminiscence his Christmas as a child played by Peter Billingsley. Ralphie wishes to get a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas and tries many attempts to convince his parents to get him one. However, no matter how hard he tries, his plans keep failing as well as being told by many people that he'll "Shoot his eye out". Will Ralphie ever get the gift that he always dreams of getting?

Where do I begin with this film? I guess I might as well talk about our character, that’s a good start for any review. First off, I love that the film is told from the memories and the point of view of our main character as an adult because one major aspect of Christmas is the memories we share, especially from childhood. On the plus side, not only does Jean Shepherd give a great narration, but he also wrote the book that this film was based on, which the story itself are based on memories of him when he was a child. So as you can imagine he fits the role perfectly. Peter Billingsley as his young self is perfect for the role. He has the right amount of innocence and humor for his character, and on top of it, he represents most of us when we were kids. Yeah, I know the film takes place at a time when most of us in this current generation weren't even born yet, but the nostalgia of us when we were kids is there. Our obsession over a toy; the dares that our friends made us do; our parents fighting, but getting along with each other; being fussy about eating;having silly day dreams; being scammed by a show; the feeling most of us get on Christmas; and so much more, are all aspects that most of us have been through in our childhood. The supporting characters are also not just fun characters, but like I said they too for most of us represent the typical people we knew when we were kids. You have the over protective Mother; the grouchy firm, but loving Father; the annoying little sibling; the strict teacher; the fun, but wise ass friendsl and the neighborhood and school bully.

Even if your childhood didn't have much or heck any of those nostalgia values that this film offers it still has plenty for both kids and adults to enjoy. The characters again are really a lot of fun; the story and the many sub plots it has are enjoyable; the jokes can give you a huge laugh; the dialogue is quotable; and the film again has a wonderful Christmas feel. I'm sure most of us who seen this film and watch it every year can countlessly talk about the many scenes and little moments that happen in this film such as the flag pole scene; the Father's obsession with his prize; the scene when Ralphie says a naughty word; the day dream sequences; the events that happen on Christmas; and of course my favorite scene of them all, Ralphie’s encounter with Santa Claus. The film also has great cinematography; a christmassy score; nice sets; and colorful art direction.

"A Christmas Story" is one of the greatest Christmas films because it can appeal to both kids and adults with its nostalgia, humor, characters, writing, and wonderful Christmas feel and atmosphere.

RATING 5/5
