SPIDER-MAN (1981-1982)

A while ago, I reviewed the two first episodes of the 60's Spider-Man cartoon which I found extremely disappointing as well as being a terrible start to introducing this great hero to the film and TV media. Well now, I'm going to jump a decade and review the show in the early 1980s that only lasted a season. Is it an underrated show that should have gotten another season and should be remembered, or should it be buried and forgotten? ON WITH THE REVIEW...

Like I said, the show only lasted a season, so instead of just reviewing the first episode, I'm going to review the whole season, since it didn't last that long. Expect me to do that in future reviews as well.

THE INTRO

The shows intro is actually really cool, as well as really pulling you into the show. I love how it starts out with our hero on top of the shows title and then swinging off to fight crime. The intro itself has a lot going on, such as showing off the villains, our hero in danger and constantly saving people, it has almost everything that a Spider-Man intro should have. All it needs is to show Peter getting bit by a radioactive Spider, that's it. The music is also really cool and mind blowing and the animation is very decent and has a good comic book look to it. Great intro but lets see if the show itself can do the same amount of justice.

BUBBLE, BUBBLE, OIL & TROUBLE

Doc Ock is planing on stealing all the oil supply so he can take over the world, can Spider-Man stop him?Yes, the first episode is not about how Peter came to be Spider-Man, nor does it mention how. Aside from that, hows the episode? Well Spider-Man is really heroic and enjoyable here and the way he thinks and talks is the Spider-Man we know and love and I'll say it right now, his dialogue is really fun. When he's Peter Parker, he's the Peter Parker we're all familiar with then being just some bland young adult with a bland personality (I'm of course referencing the Peter Parker in the first two episodes of the 60's show). The villain Doc Ock is really enjoyably evil and his mechanical arms are as cool as ever, not to mention having many different features and gadgets. The episode also does a fine job at introducing the supporting characters such as Peter's Aunt May, his Boss Jameson and his rival at the bugle Mortimer and yes they are all portrayed very accurate to the characters we are all familiar with. The writing is just as good as the comics and really exposes the greatness of this hero and the action is decent, it's not mind blowing but it's good. As for the animation, well it's very Saturday Morning cartoonish but with that said, that's what the show is suppose to be so for a Saturday Morning cartoon show, it's really good.  Despite the fact it doesn't introduce or mention Spider-Man's origins to newcomers, it's still a good start to the series and is indeed very accurate to our knowledge and depiction of Spider-Man.

RATING 5/5

DR.DOOM MASTER OF THE WORLD

Dr.Doom and his robot army are planting mind control chips on the world leaders so he can rule the world, can Spider-Man figure out his plan in time? Spider-Man is just as fun, smart, clever and heroic as he was in the previous episode and how he fights Doom's robots and figures out ways to get out of death traps is all really clever writing. Dr.Doom himself is really, really threatening here. His design is evil looking; his plan of taking over the world is great; and his robot army is awesome, especially the one that flies after Spider-Man, that was a really good action sequence! The animation is just as good as the previous episode and to be honest I don't think it's bad for a old school superhero show. The atmosphere is also really pulling me into the show even more. Also as a New Yorker, I love how they drew the lanndmarks to the city. I guess the only flaw is how our hero defeats Dr.Doom. It's not how he does it, it just feels very anti climatic and the result turns Dr.Doom into a total wimp. Great episode, just wish the climax was better.

RATING 4/5

LIZARDS, LIZARDS EVERYWHERE

The Lizard takes control of the minds of reptiles and plans to use them to take over New York, meanwhile Spider-Man has a really bad cold and is in bad shape because of it. Spider-Man is just as awesome as he is in the last two episodes. He's funny, he has great use of his brains and webslinging and the scenes when he goes to public places it feels natural then stupid, almost in the 60's Batman show in a sense. The Lizard, I'm going to admit never really wowed me as a villain, I liked that he has a split personality and has a good back story but in almost every version his emotions and character are played out either corny or forced.Yeah sometimes he can be scary but he still feels like a bland villain. Here he's so bland and not so interesting that the writers don't even acknowledge his back story or talk about who he really is. His plan while sounding stupid is executed pretty well, so I'll give a little credit to this adaption to this villain. Overall while the silliness in it is executed well and Spider-Man remains awesome, the villain sucks so bad that the reptiles are more threatening compared to him.

RATING 4/5

CURIOSITY KILLED THE SPIDER-MAN

Peter is having trouble with his relationship with Betty from "The Daily Bugle" because Catwoman, I mean the Black Cat is planing on stealing a priceless gem. Yes, the Black Cat is without a doubt a rip off on Catwoman. She steals jewelery with her Cat burglary, she's hot, her personality is similar, she has a cat army and she kind of likes Spider-Man. Yeah, might as well write lawsuit all over her. While having a blant rip off of Catwoman with nothing new or interesting, the episode is actually pretty good. Spider-Man is not only cool, heroic and funny but I love the subplot of him struggling of his relationship with Betty and Spider-Man's webslinging his webs into items is just as cool as the previous ones. I also love the cameo of Clark Kent and a parody talk show host on Johnny Carson. If the episode didn't have a rip off character of Catwoman with nothing to make her original, I would have given it a 5/5. I know her character's in the 90's show, so maybe they'll update her and not make her as much of a rip off as she is here.

RATING 4/5

THE SANDMAN IS COMING

The Sandman is more powerful then ever, Peter is in trouble with the School board and he accidentally left his closet door open where Aunt May can see his extra Spider suit. This episode is the episode that I've been waiting for! It's full of action that holds you on the edge of your seat, it never runs out of plot, the villain is really cool and powerful and the episode really tests the skills and brains that our hero has. It's just an all together great episode and it never gets dull or boring, it's just all done right!

RATING 5/5

WHEN MAGNETO SPEAKS...PEOPLE LISTEN

The electricity and power around the world has been shut down and taken away by a mysterious villain and holds it all for a ransom. Can Spider-Man figure out who he is...not only yes but the villain's name is in the title of the fricken episode, so it makes the mystery plot useless. Anyway our hero Spider-Man is not as awesome or interesting as he was in the past episodes and his struggles with his hero life and normal life are more played out for laughs then adding more to the stress of the character or as another plot point of the episode. The villain Magneto, well he's nothing but a boring cliched Saturday morning cartoon villain. He has no personality, his plan doesn't interest, the fights between him and Spider-Man are a bore and he just looks more silly then threatening. What really confused me in the episode is the villain traps Spider-Man in some kind of bubble force field but for some reason he can shoot webs through it. Yeah, it makes no sense at all. I think it is explained how but not clearly nor do the writers feel like explaining it. The episode is boring, with nothing new or interesting and it feels like the writers weren't trying in this episode.

RATING 1/5

THE PIED PIPER OF NEW YORK TOWN

After hearing the title, I thought I was going to get cheap and cheesy Pied Piper villain, instead I got one of my all time favorite Spider-Man villains and that villain is Mysterio! Mysterio has hypnotized all of the residents of New York City with his music, however, Spider-Man is unaffected by it due to his Spider half but with the citizens of New York on Mysterio's side, he maybe impossible to defeat. Spider-Man is back to being as heroic, funny and clever as he is and the writers defiantly redeemed himself from the previous episode. I also love Jamerson in this episode because he's really hilarious in this one.The writing goes from giving you unexplained questions which come off as plot holes to having the questions answered and the plot holes filled. Yeah, it's a bit of a tease but it still works. Mysterio is just as awesome as I know him. His plan is clever, he uses some of his tricks on Spider-Man and  you're not sure if Spider-Man will be able to defeat him which causes more thrills. I'm really glad that we've gone from a poor episode to another great one!

RATING 5/5

THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBES DOOM

Dr.Doom has returned and is planing on taking away the ambassadors of the U.N. and replacing them with robots to help him rule the world. This mostly a rehash of Dr.Dooms previous plan, I mean can we get something new. As usual Spider-Man is still cool and he does have some great heroic moments epically in the opening. However, there's a part of the story where he thinks he accidentally killed his friend at the Bugle, however, we know he didn't, wouldn't it be more effecting if we thought he killed him? The supporting characters such as Betty, Aunt May and Jameson appear but there's nothing new to them, it's the same formula and Jameson just made a nasty and maybe prejudice comment on the U.N. (That actually disturbs me). Aside from Doom's rehashed plan, he's still enjoyable, powerful (Even though he shoots cheap animated rays) and actually out smarts our hero at points. The episode is not great but it does hint that there might be a follow up episode and raises a few questions, epically in the opening where a son and father try to get out of Doom's country.

RATING 3/5

CARNIVAL OF CRIME

Peter, Betty and Aunt May go to the Carnival to have a good time, however, an evil ringmaster and his circus gang are robbing banks and using hypnotic gas to make the people think Spider-Man did it. Can Spider-Man close the curtain on these clowns? This episode really has a good set up and I like seeing Peter spending time with his Aunt and love interest, it's actually really interesting. The Ringmaster and his gang are really cool and the Ringmaster is just pure hateful but with that said, they don't really appeal to me as much as they should and I wish they could of given these villains more instead of relying on the animals to fight our hero and using the hypnotic cliche. We also get to see Jamerson's son Mortimer again and see him take a crack at taking mean pictures of our hero. Overall, it's a good episode, I just didn't find it amazing as the ones with Sandman and Mysterio.

RATING 4/5

REVENGE OF THE GREEN GOBLIN

It's Halloween and after a train accident where everyone dies (Wow, what a gruesome start to a kids show) Norman Osbourne survives and now he has his memory back and becomes the Green Goblin to seek revenge on Spider-Man and Jameson. I know it's a Halloween episode but it's in the context of the show for what I understand, so screw it, I'm going to review it. Spider-Man, what can I say that I haven't said before, he's just awesome and defiantly knows how to get out of situations. The struggle between his relationship with Betty is still interesting and you can actually feel the attachment from these two. Now the episode is called "Revenge Of The Green Goblin" but this is his first episode, however instead of erasing his back story or just mentioning it, they actually show it in flashbacks. I'm really really pleased that the writers decided to show the back story. On top of it, The Green Goblin himself is so awesome and villainous that he's not only fun but he's also a huge threat to our hero. He knows his identity, he has a helmet that can show you the past and future and he causes nothing but chaos. Oh by the way, for you fans out there, Gwen Stacy actually makes a cameo in the episode as she hits on Peter, hopefully will see more of her soon. Overall, I'm very pleased by this episode and I have a strong feeling that we will see Spider-Man and the Goblin fight again really soon.

RATING 5/5

TRIANGLE OF EVIL

Could this be a villain team up, sadly no. An old arch rival of Spider-Man called the stuntman plans to steal priceless items while distracting Spider-Man with a few stunt challenges. That's your plot and boy is it stupid and unexciting. Sure our hero's enjoyable but he really doesn't save the stupidness or the lame writing that this episode has to offer. All he does is just do three stunt challenges while being filmed against a man who's stuck to his costume robot man forever and takes on two bland henchman named Moe and Larry...exciting or cool anyone? I will admit, the Twin Towers climbing challenge did sound cool but it was executed very dully. As for the villain, he's not interesting nor does he serve as a threat against Spider-Man, it's just one big competition challenging him. After having a fantastic episode, we've returned to another unexciting and badly written episode.

RATING 1/5

THE A-B-C'S OF D-O-O-M

Doctor Doom has teamed up with a guy named Goron who has powers shooting out of his eyes (What he is, is never explained) and the two plan to take over the world. This episode was OK. It's nice to see Doctor Doom have a different plan by taking over the world, in fact he actually succeeds in part of his plan. However, the focus is his henchman Goron and despite not knowing who the heck he is, he's pretty cool but his death traps for our hero are weak. Spider-Man really has not much to do here nor is he in a situation that holds you at the edge of your seat. The only thrill is when the world is about to be destroyed which all leads to a resolution so easy that you don't have to be Spider-Man to figure it out. We also get to see a little more of Doom's country and as for the two guys that tried to escape in the previous episode with Doom; they're in the episode but I still have no idea who they are and what they're purpose in the story is. As for the action it wasn't exciting, the dialogue is lame, we get a completely rehashed moment with Spider-Man and a cop and we find out that Peter forgot a date with Betty which was never addressed early on in the episode. Worth a look only because their might be a continuation to this story, other than that it's pretty lame and unexciting.

RATING 2/5

THE SIDEWINDER STRIKES

A masked urban cowboy riding a mechanical flying horse called the Sidewinder is after Spider-Man and Spider-Man is wondering who the man behind the mask is. The episode was entertaining but sadly, I didn't really care for it. The action and death traps wasn't interesting or intense, there are a few goofy moments that involve Spider-Man (One scene when he's dressed as a chef to get into a club), the mystery to the villain wasn't holding me on the edge of my seat and the villain in general is not only a lame threat to Spider-Man but he's just bland and silly. The episodes whole rodeo theme also wasn't engaging, it just felt stupid and out of place. Overall, while being a lame and uninteresting episode, it's not bad, just not for a Spider-Man fan like me.

RATING 3/5

Just by reading the title, you know the episodes villain is going to be Kraven The Hunter. Kraven The Hunter has captured the last known Sabre-Tooth Tiger and jungle man of an Island filled with Dinosaurs (Just go with it) named Ka-Zar heads to New York City to get his friend back. However, Kraven has set up a few traps for our heroes. If you remember in my review of the first Season of the 90's show, I wasn't a big fan of Kraven The Hunter. Well here in the 81 show, he appeals to me a lot better than before. Ok, he still bores me but at least he has better traps set up for Spider-Man and Ka-Zar, in fact he nearly wins. Ka-Zar the jungle man is more of the episodes star and focus then Spider-Man and while I do find him to be some what cool, I still do find him a bore. As for Spider-Man, despite not showing up much, he still is cool, fun and is always finding clever ways of outwitting the villain. While the episode wasn't great or fantastic by having an ok villain and an ok supporting hero, it was still entertaining.

RATING 3/5

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING SPIDER-MAN

A janitor who becomes the gadgeteer steals a shrink ray from a scientist and makes Spider-Man small. The plot and story actually held me on the edge of my seat because I found it interesting to see Spider-Man try to survive in a environment that he's not use to. I also like enjoy seeing the many challenges and obstacles that he has to face and has to figure out his way to get passed them. The episode also pays tribute to the film "The Incredible Shrinking Man" and even though I haven't seen it, from what I looked up it's looks like an interesting movie. With all the praise, I still found the episode a little to goofy. The villain is so goofy and lame that not once do I find him threatening, in fact he doesn't even try to stomp on our hero while he has a chance. There's also moments that have a good idea but are executed in a very cheap and goofy way, like Spider-Man fighting a Cat or Spider-Man almost being eaten by a cheaply drawn black widow Spider. There's also those life like Spider-Man toys that can walk, climb walls and shoot webs which I'll admit is pretty cool but goofy at the same time. The episode is a really goofy one but if you can buy into the goofiness I guess you wouldn't have a problem. At least it was more entertaining than the last couple episodes that I had to review but still it's a love or hate.

RATING 3/5

THE UNFATHOMABLE PROFESSOR GIZMO

The evil Professor Gizmo has a box that can control any vehicle and weapon with what ever the professor puts his transistor antenna on, so he can use them for his crime. However, his biggest crime involves Spider-Man helping him or else! Boy has it been awhile since we've seen a great Spider-Man episode! Spider-Man has so many challenges to face in this episode, that he has to start fighting when you first see him. On top of it, people (Especially Jameson) think he's a criminal working with the villain which makes his situation even more stiff. Throughout the episode our hero has to face one challenge after another! The villain Professor Gizmo is so fun, so classy and so villainous that he might be one of Spider-Man's toughest opponents. We also get a great under water climax which to me is the episodes highlight and the biggest surprise in the climax involves Jameson. Great come back episode and I hope to see more great ones!

RATING 5/5

CANON OF DOOM

Dr.Doom plans to destroy the city with a laser canon to create an Earthquake, meanwhile in Dr Doom's country; the rebel who've we met a few times makes his escape with the help of Dr.Doom's right hand man Boris. As you may have guessed, our hero Spider-Man isn't really the focus until the end where he has to save the day. The focus is really on Dr.Doom and the young rebel Yohan and to be honest, that's what makes the episode really interesting. Not only is Dr.Doom threatening and intimidating in this episode but we get to learn his back story which I found to be very tragic and amusing. The young Rebel Yohan not only shows up more in this episode then just being in a scene but he might be the key to save this evil country lead by Dr. Doom. Even though Spider-Man doesn't appear much in this episode, not only is his on screen presence awesome but he's in a tighter spot then ever. We also get to spend plenty of time with Jameson in this episode as well and boy is he a riot in every scene he's in. OK, he's always a riot but here he's really funny. This episode is a big step forward in the Dr.Doom plot of the series and I can't wait to see what happens next.

RATING 5/5

THE CAPTURE OF CAPTAIN AMERICA

Captain America is coming to make an appearance in New York City and everyone is hyped. However, he gets kidnapped by his arch enemy the Red Skull and people think that Spider-Man was part of this plan. Spider-Man must now rescue one of my America's most beloved heroes. This is the first crossover in the series between Spider-Man and another Marvel hero and while I enjoy the concept, it wasn't anything special, in fact, the two share very little screen time together which is a downer but hey what do you expect in a title like this. Spider-Man being frowned upon by New Yorkers wasn't sad, it wasn't anything that was going to damage this hero because we all know that he's going to redeem himself. Captain America doesn't really do much here except get captured and to be honest that only lowers my intention and interest on this hero. The Red Skull, while having a cool design, he's predictable, he's all bark and less bite and he doesn't interest me either. What makes the episode goofy is seeing Spider-Man hide his identity by dressing up as Captain America made very little sense to me but the "Stan's Costume Shop" joke was pretty clever. Oh and shocker, Jameson actually is crazy for Captain America. They explain why but I don't know, it kind of brings his whole I hate masked vigilantes down the drain. The episode is pretty much of a let down but it at least it wasn't bad or awful.

RATING 3/5

THE DOOM REPORT

Yohan has escaped from Dr.Doom's country and now he plains to expose Doom for the Tyrant he is and have him over thrown with the help of Spider-Man. This episode is chuck full of nothing but on the edge of your seat awesomeness! We got Yohan and Spider-Man finally teaming up together, Dr.Doom is holding the world hostage, their are Gypsy spies that work for our main villain, we get a few death traps and the climax while not having much action, it still puts you on the edge of your seat hoping that this great villain will be over thrown. However, with so much going on in this episode as well as making you think that this is the finale to the Dr.Doom subplot of the show, well it isn't and boy do we get one heck of a cliffhanger and some questions that are left unanswered and characters who we just met. I hope the follow up to this episode is just as great as this one!

RATING 5/5

Convinced by his girlfriend Penny, Scientist Dr.Shaw turns himself into a Mutant Spider called Nephilia from the blood sample he got from Spider-Man. Now he plans to take him out and become a master criminal. The episode was fairly decent. Spider-Man has some good heroic moments in the episode, as well as staying honest and true to himself no matter what. There's a dumb subplot of Peter Parker not being able to work for the Bugle if he doesn't donate blood and while being stupid, I will say I like how honest our hero is. On top of it, it does lead to a good twist with Jameson at the end. The two villains in the episode are really decent. Dr.Shaw starts out as a decent character but once he becomes Nephilia, he starts becoming a real threatening match for Spider-Man. As for his girlfriend Penny, she's a fun villain too but to tell you the truth, she's actually the main villain of this episode. The episodes climax, actually has plenty of great things happening such as character development and Spider-Man using his brains to out smart the villain. I guess the only lame stuff that this episode has aside from the dumb but ok subplot is the pacing and some of Spider-Man's lame jokes. Aside from that, it's a really enjoyable episode and has kept me entertained and interested from beginning to end.

RATING 4/5

COUNTDOWN TO DOOM

Dr.Doom has sent the world out of it's orbit and unless the world bows down to him, their will be a second Ice Age. This episode is the final chapter to the whole Dr.Doom subplot of the show and aside from lacking action and having his plan be a little complicated for a kids show, it's still a great finale. We get to see Spider-Man team up with Yohan, Boris and the rebels again. We get an interesting plot twist regarding one of the rebels. Dr.Doom is also so close to taking over the world that it makes me wonder how our hero can defeat him and save the world which makes this a huge challenge for Spider-Man. While not giving to much away, it can be too confusing and complicated at times for it's young audience but neither the less, it's a great conclusion to this story ark.

RATING 4/5

Spider-Man captures a cat bugler but he isn't just any bugler, he is related to the man who killed Peter's Uncle Ben. The relative goes to jail and he tells his cellmate the Chameleon about Spider-Man's early start and  his relation between him and the man. The Chameleon figures out who Spider-Man is, escapes from Prison and disguises himself as a fortune teller to trick Aunt May into killing Spider-Man by using a trick hologram of Uncle Ben telling her that Spider-Man killed him and he gives Aunt May an amulet to hypnotize her to kill him. Man, what a dark and excellent storyline! If you remember my thoughts of the Chameleon in the 90's animated series, I wasn't to interested in him, while his design in this isn't creative, he's actually a lot more threatening. I love how he tricks Aunt May and Spider-Man with illusions, I love the many disguises he takes (Which aren't dead give aways) and I love how sick and twisted his plans are! He's a great villain. Aunt May being under hypnosis is actually pretty terrifying and that's the last thing I'd ever see Aunt May as. On top of it, I do like how she does fight with herself while being in a hypnosis state as well as seeing her snap out of it from time to time before the hypno gas sprays her again. As for Spider-Man, what can I say, he's great here and watching him in this type of situation makes the episode a lot more interesting. I'm also very pleased that we see our heroes back story in this episode. While being a new kind of episodes, it does have it's dumb moments. The Prison where the villain escapes from for example is so easy that it has to be one of the worst security systems ever. Another example is when a crazed Aunt May tries to kill Spider-Man in a van with her in it, does she know that she's going to die too by her actions or is she so messed up that all she can think is kill? If you can get passed these dumb moments and believe me they aren't really as bad as I make it out to be, it's still a really great episode.

RATING 5/5

THE VULTURE HAS LANDED

The Vulture plans to steal the Jupiter Probe with the help of his robotic birds and invisible paint, can our hero Spider-Man stop this flying bird? This episode is kind of stupid. Granted, the villain is cool but then again his goofy design makes me wonder who he is and what his back story is. I mean an old man with a bird body, kind of odd if you ask me. I was expecting some interesting action between our hero and this villain but sadly I received nothing. The characters in this episode do talk about Harry Osbourne, in fact Peter gets grabbed by the Vulture since the Vulture thinks he's Harry (It's a long story) but we never even meet Harry in this episode nor the previous episodes, so what's the point of talking about him or revolving a misunderstanding regarding to Harry if we never even meet him yet? There's also a running gag with an old annoying pilot who thinks Spider-Man is a gremlin which is not funny and a poor reference to "The Twilight Zone". In fact, Spider-Man even tells the pilot that's he's AFRAID OF HEIGHTS! I talked about my angry to that phrase in the "Kraven The Hunter" review from the 90's Animated Series, so lets move on. The dialogue is not funny, it's cheesy and lame and the episode again does lack action which makes it unexciting. It's a lame episode that feels entirely pointless and unexciting.

RATING 1/5

The Kingpin and many other gangsters decide to join forces to use a powerful acid to carry out their crimes. Sounds like a good challenge for Spider-Man to face but sadly there's more. The acid causes pollution which angers another Marvel character named Sub-Mariner who begins to take revenge on the world for sickening his cousin. I like the idea of having another Marvel character guest star in an episode but how can I know who he is since we've never met him early on in the series and know nothing about his back story? Plus how can I take this guy seriously, his design looks like a Mr. Spock rip off. You can't just throw in a hero we've never met before in the series, know nothing about him and expect us to like him? If you're a Marvel fan and know about him, I guess it works for you but for me it's confusing and doesn't work. The villain the Kingpin started out interesting but sadly, he doesn't do much here and as for the other gangsters, they're not interesting either. I kind of like that the episode brings an anti pollution message but I don't know, it feels kind of corny and forced especially from a character I know NOTHING about. As for Spider-Man, well he gets some fun dialogue but that's it, he really doesn't do anything interesting. Oh by the way, he does make a "Godfather Part 3" joke, you know before they actually made a "Godfather Part 3" film...sigh...if only they knew. The episode wasn't exciting, the villains weren't interesting, the crossover hero is confusing, Spider-Man does little and the anti pollution message isn't as strong as you think it is.

RATING 1/5

THE RETURN OF THE KINGPIN

Peter wants to earn extra money as Spider-Man so he can do something nice for Aunt May. A guy named Hal gives him a few jobs to help our hero earn some cash, however, Hal works for the Kingpin. First problem, in the previous episode, the Kingpin goes to jail but here he's free as a bird with no mention of the previous events what so ever! That's one of the biggest disappointments that this episode has to offer considering that the episodes with Dr.Doom were followed up accurately. The episode itself isn't interesting or engaging either, it's mostly boring and predictable. We all know Spider-Man's going to redeem himself and figure out that the Kingpin's behind it and none of the crimes that our hero accidentally commits that ruins his image isn't treated as bad or effectively as it should, it's more of an annoyance or the same old reactions we've seen in previous episodes. Oh and the final fight with the Kingpin and his gang of martial artists is one of the biggest let downs that I was ever introduce too. Not much else to but it's another terrible episode that doesn't hold you on the edge of your seat at all.

RATING 1/5

UNDER THE WIZARD'S SPELL

This is our final episode of the Season and show itself. Spider-Man meets his old friend and love interest Medusa who fights crime with her hair, however, she is now under control of a villain called the Wizard. Can Spider-Man save her? We've gone from three disappointing episodes to an episode that concludes the show very well. Medusa, well despite the fact that we know very little of her back story on where she came from, how she got those powers and what she use to do; I still find her so likable and heroic that I'm willing to overlook it which is very rare of me to do. Her powers are cool, her personality is charming and she even saves Spider-Man on one or two occasions during the episode. On top of it, the chemistry and relationship between the two is so engaging, so interesting and so romantic that it was hard for me not to feel it. Alright, it's done a little fast at points but it's defiantly there and something you can feel. The villain is so hateful and so incredibly powerful that he's one of those villains that you hope Spider-Man defeats. When you see him abuse and use Medusa and have Spider-Man in clutches you think this villain is actually going to win or at least get away in the end. Yeah he's that mean and that awesome. The action is back and kicks ass, as well as giving Spider-Man a few struggles both physically and emotionally. This is a great come back episode and while being a satisfying conclusion, it's just sad to see the show end here.

RATING 5/5

OVERALL

Well I can't say it's one of the greatest Spider-Man series because most of the characters, relationships, special guest heroes and villains are either ignored later on or we don't know anything about them in general which will confuse newcomers to Spider-Man and disappoint fans who do know Spider-Man. Not even mentioning how Spider-Man got his powers is one of the biggest flaws that this show offers because that's like thee most important part of the Spider-Man story that should never ever be left out, could they at least mention it? While getting great villains at times (especially Dr.Doom) most of them are either bland, goofy or just the typical Saturday Morning cartoon villains. As for the writing, when it wants to be good, it's good but when it wants to be lazy, by god is it lazy, as well as making the episode boring when comparing it to other great episodes. The last episode to the series was good but wouldn't it be nice to end the Season with the final confrontation between Spider-Man and Dr.Doom. I also hate how anti climatic most of the action is when in other episodes we've seen some pretty cool and decent action.

With my negatives aside, I do praise our main hero Spider-Man. He's the hero we're all familiar with, he can be funny and he can be identifiable as well. I also love that the writers got creative with his webslinging by having him make things out of his webs. The supporting characters such as Jamerson, Aunt May and Betty while some being ignored or not having a complete story ark, they're still fun and likable. The villains like I said, the ones who are awesome are really awesome. The Dr.Doom story ark while sometimes rehashing plans and having some episodes that are confusing to the young crowd and newcomers is still a great story ark that kept me interested from beginning to end. The only one I didn't like in the Dr.Doom story ark is the one with Goron; however, that episode did have a few important things leading up to the next episode, so it wasn't entirely pointless. The animation is not bad for a Saturday Morning cartoon. It looks dated and does carry some of those cliches but it's still fun and well animated. While not being one of the greatest Spider-Man cartoon of all time, it's still fun and it's heart is in the right place. For those who know nothing about Spider-Man, this will only confuse you. For those who like Spider-man, you'll enjoy it fine despite it's flaws. By the way, there's another show called "Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends" that was made around the same time as this show and fans say that the two shows connect. So who knows maybe that show will fill in the plot holes and back stories that I tend question throughout the review, maybe with the two series together will make this one of the great Spider-Man series but for now here's my rating on this series alone.

RATING 3/5
