BOXING HELENA

Here's a film directed by David Lynch's daughter Jennifer Lynch called...

A surgeon named Nick (Julian Sand) obsesses over a woman he use to have an affair with named Helena (Sherilyn Fenn). He does everything he can to show how madly in love he is with her but Helena refuses him and tells him to "move on". One day, Helena gets into an accident with an on coming car and instead of taking her to the hospital, Nick decides to keep her in his house for himself while amputating her arms and legs.

OK, problem one, the main character played by Julian Sand. AM I SUPPOSE TO LIKE AND SYMPATHIZES WITH THIS CHARACTER?! I know that the guy is madly in love with her and will do anything for her even KILL HIMSELF but stalking her, holding her prisoner, taking off her bloody arms and legs, HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSE TO LIKE HIM? In "A Clockwork Orange" while having us identify and feel bad for Alex during the scenes where everyone takes their revenge on him, the film still clearly made him out to be a villain with nothing likable about him at all. Here, our main character isn't portrayed as a villain, he's portrayed as a desperate depressed man who just wants love and will go through desperate measures to get it. He's nowhere near likable or a character you can sympathizes with at all, he's just plain creepy! Helena, I didn't feel bad for her at all during the film. How can I feel bad for a woman who's so shallow, so mean and so whorish....Mrs.Robinson, BUT she had a sad back story that made her the way she is as well as being a fun character. Helena has none of that, she's as unlikable as Mary Steenburgen in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". The rest of the supporting characters are either boring, unlikable or forgettable and none of them are not worth talking about, even Bill Paxton's character in the film.

While I watched the film, I did notice some good sets and nice cinematography but with that said, none of that doesn't save anything. Most of the artistic stuff come from the many sex scenes that appear in this movie and while having an artistic look, I don't know, I feel like I'm watching a censored porno of some sort. On top of it, those scenes feel really pointless especially the sex dream sequences of Nick's fantasies with her. Oh and not to give anything away but the ending is a really really huge downer and lousy pay off, let's just say it took the route that the film "North" took, enough said.

I don't know how else to describe this movie, all I know is while I was watching it I felt unclean, dirty, disgusted and sick as well as sighing at how incredibly dumb, pointless, disturbing and time wasting that this film was. It's a really bad god awful movie that not only deserved the Razzie for Worst Director but should also be nominated for Worst Picture and win it!

RATING 0/5
