2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

Here's a review on the best futuristic movie of all time while also containing one of cinemas most scariest horror villain, I'm talking about...

This film has four different segments, so I'll be reviewing them all individually but I will NOT be rating them.

THE DAWN OF MEN

In this segment we see vegetarian apes live in fear but after seeing The First Monolith, the apes become brave, become hunters and killers with humanity's first weapon, the sharp bone. I never thought I'd see a film where just plan old apes would be so entertaining. There are no humans, no narrators, it's all done by movement, music and great shots. The best and epic moments is when they discover the Monolith, when the ape discovers the sharp bone and the transition to the next segment. You'll probably might notice scenes in the film that resemble this sequence as well. The music's big, epic, weird and only gets better and better.

THE LUNAR JOURNEY IN THE YEAR 2000

In the year 2000, scientists have discovered a second Monolith on the moon lead by Dr.Floyd (William Sylvester). While our main character and story is decent, it's really the futuristic world that takes over. We see many futuristic things (Which some have came true), amazing set designs, awesome special effects and great imagery. This film and (Segment) shows how truly Hollywood is getting lazy because this is a perfect film to talk about that doesn't use or doesn't use much of CGI. If this film was remade (AND I HOPE IT DOESN'T!) it would probably have so much CGI that I bet will only make the original even more incredible and make the remake be far more inferior. Most of the scenes in this segment do look and feel like you can cut it out for timing but they're so good and spectacular that it just brings nothing but incredible atmosphere. On a final note, Dr.Floyd's daughter is played by Kubrick's Daughter and there's a thing about Birthdays in this film on each segment.

JUPITER MISSION 18 MONTHS LATER

This is the main part of our film. Dave(Keri Dullea) and Frank(Gary Lockwood) are sent on a secret mission to Jupiter with their spaceships control system HAL. However, the computer turns bad and tries to kill our main characters. The characters are likable and enjoyable, the special effects are cooler but lets talk about the thing everyone remembers from this movie and why I reviewed the film for Halloween month, HAL. At first when we meet HAL, it sounds like a very cool and very well tamed machine, however, everything goes down hill once we get towards the intermission. First off look at this computer, it may not look much but when being the control center of the ship and having an unsettling red eye that watches you, already you get chills. The voice that this robot has(Voiced by Douglas Rein) is really really creepy and even when it sounds friendly there's still something not suttle about it. This computer also has the ability to kill you when you least expect it, it knows the human mind, it has a mind of it's own and on top of it, it'll try to reach the center of your emotions with it's human like personality. HAL is a robot that you can't run from since you're in the middle of space and you can never hide from because it has eyes watching you at all times.

JUPITER AND BEYOND THE INFINITE

This segment is one of the most surreal things I've ever seen in cinema. It's so surreal that I dare not spoil it for you but trust me when I say it's so weird and odd, that it's totally awesome.

While most recent viewers find it to long and boring, I still think it's one of the best films ever made! To me it isn't a movie, it's an experience that you should defiantly see in theaters epically IMAX (If it ever gets re released) or see it on the biggest TV screen possible with a great sound system. This film is truly one of Kubrick's greatest!

RATING 5/5
