Well like I said, it's a cute premise with cute characters but with that said, the film was actually more dark then cute. In fact, as a kid this movie scared me so bad that even just saying the title scares me. Now I love it and I think the main reason why kids and people who saw it as kids, go back to it is not just because of the characters, songs and creative story, it's mainly because of it's dark atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's too scary for kids but all this stuff were the main reason why that most of us kept watching this film and that's what actually made the film so cool. To honor this film for being one of the darkest kids film ever made, I'm going to do a countdown on the stuff that are not just scary but are also disturbing. So here's my countdown on...
"THE TOP TEN DISTURBING MOMENTS FROM THE BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER"
TOP 10 DISTURBING MOMENTS FROM "TBLT"
(For Short)
WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS!
NUMBER 10
BLANKY'S HALLUCINATION
This scene isn't really a disturbing moment, it's more of a "What The Hllk" scene that actually sets the films odd atmosphere. You can argue that the fact of the appliances coming alive was the start of the surreal atmosphere but come on, we were already expecting that. This scene takes the surreal idea and tone a bit too far. Blanky hears a car, looks out the window hoping that it's his master and for some odd reason everything turns bright and colorful, the car changes into a different car and Blanky makes the weirdest happy and excited face that I ever seen. As the car pulls up, the colorful land changes into a land full hedges and their master exits the car as we see two creepy silhouettes in the front seat. Seriously those silhouettes are really freaky and to me they're the first scary thing we encounter in the movie. Blanky floats down the stairs with the same weird face and the cottage now looks like the inside of a mansion or palace. Where's the other appliances in this surreal sequence, they're picture frames as their old counterpart. Kirby's a broom, Radio is an old fashion radio, Lampy is a candle and Toaster is a fire with a stick of bread over it. Instead of the Master being freaked out that the blanket is alive, he calls out his name (Which by the way are the only words that the young master says) and Blanky calls out to him. A little fun trivia, they're voiced by the same actor. As the two are about to cutely hug each other, the master vanishes, the blanket is back to reality and we go to an annoying while at the same time depressing scene. I know the scene is suppose to be Blanky's fantasy but I'm sorry it feels more like a drug trip then something cutesy. In fact Blanky actually looks like he's high. While not all that disturbing or scary, it's still a very odd scene then something cool or heartwarming.
NUMBER 9
THE STORM SCENE
This is really an intense scene. After a disturbing scene that'll be much higher on the list, a storm breaks out in the woods, Blanky disappears, their power source is dead and Lampy practically commits suicide to bringing the power of lighting to feed their power source. Damn that truly is a really intense and disturbing scene. Of course with that said, they find Blanky and Lampy survives being struck by lightning. However, when watching it for the first time, you can almost swear that this is the end of two of our characters and the idea of Lampy nearly giving his life away for a device that means nothing to them since they can use their abilities by themselves is pointless but still depressing and disturbing, not mention that his electrocution looks incredibly brutal. It's an intense and brutal scene and even knowing things are going to turn out fine, it still is a harsh scene.
NUMBER 8
QUICKSAND
Lets be honest, we were all afraid and terrified of Quicksand as kids and even though our characters get out of this one, it's still a very scary and disturbing scene. Kirby accidentally gets knocked into the Quicksand and while he sinks, he goes from making comical sarcastic comments to screaming for help as he gets sucked in. While Lampy feels bad and depressed, he himself only has a second to realize that he too is sinking. As Blanky and Toaster sink, Toaster tries to save him but Blanky tells him that he's "not scared" with a scared face and tone of his voice and the two sink. The Radio is the last one left and he tries to avoid being sunk and knowing that he can't get avoid it, he plays the song "Mammy" by Al Jolson as he's sinking. My god, does this scene scare me, depress me and disturbs me. If you're afraid of Quicksand, well this scene will increase your fear.
NUMBER 7
THE AIR CONDITIONER
When I was a kid, this character and scene scared me so bad, that it's one of the many reasons why I avoided watching the film as a kid and apparently, a lot people were afraid of this character and scene. Why not, he's as scary as "OZ The Great And Powerful". His design is freaky, his personality and monotone voice is creepy and the air blowing out of him is near as powerful as the fire from the "OZ" head with the most eeriest wind sound that you probably ever heard. Even his laugh is scary. Of course the scene that really crapped our pants was the scene where he blows up after being so frustrated and emotionally upset about the master never using him . It's sad, scary, dramatic and the voicing acting, atmosphere and colors for the scene is what made it so disturbing, scary and intense. As I grew up, I wasn't afraid of this scene or the character as I did as a kid, in fact he's my favorite supporting character in the film. Phil Hartman from SNL" voices him (Which I can't believe that he use to scare the daylights out of me) and not only is his voice acting perfect but he totally nails his Jack Nicholson impersonation and now makes me find the character more cool then scary. On top of it, he's the character I feel for the most. He's not a bully because he wants to be a bully, he's a bully because he feels jealous that the master used the other appliances and never ever used him because of how short he was. Feeling like he'll never be loved, he outbursts and bangs himself against the walls which causes him to blow a fuse, explode and shut himself off for good. Thinking that he's dead for the rest of the film, the master as an adult finds him all burned up and instead of leaving him, he fixes him and turns on the air. The Air Conditioner wakes up after finding out that he's not only been used by the master but the fact that the master fixed him, he cries with tears of joy realizes that he does care for him. There's no dialogue in that scene either, which is what makes it so heartwarming and moving. Oh and the fact that the the master decides to be a vet then a repair guy in the sequels is really insulting to how the character is portrayed in this film. Scary or depressing, the Air Conditioner works best both ways.
NUMBER 6
THE FLOWER
This scene is really really depressing whether you're a kid or an adult. We're not feeling bad for an Appliance, we're actually feeling bad for the only living Flower in this movie. This Flower has no face nor does it talk, it's all based on it's movement whether it feels happy or sad. The flower sits all alone in the woods with no company what so ever and when the Toaster first sees it, it's all beautiful and has a heavenly light shining on it as the only beauty in the dark woods. As the Flower sees his reflection through the Toaster thinking it's another Flower who's come to love and care for it, it starts hugging the Toaster, the Toaster tells the flower that it's only it's reflection and runs away as the Flower hugs the Toaster again. The Toaster looks through the bushes and sees a heartbroken Flower looking frail, lost all of it's beauty and wilts to it's death. This scene is so sad and depressing that it's hard not to either feel sad, heartbroken or shed a little tear.
THE BLENDERS DEATH
This is probably the most gruesome scene in the film. I know it's not an actual person dieing and that we barley know this character but still it has a soul and this character gets killed in a very harsh and violent way that's very intense and gruesome. The shopkeeper crushes him on a vice, takes out it's plug which is it's hand, stabs him with a sharp screwdriver, opens up it's insides, cuts the wires that are his body parts and takes out it's motor which is his heart. After all this, we see oil drip from the table which is no doubt the Blender's blood. Damn, that's the most gruesome death that I ever seen in a kids films. Even though we see it get torn apart in the shadows, it's still violent as well leaving us the imagination on how the character is being killed which is actually more disturbing then seeing it on film. Like the talking shoe in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" we barley know this character but we still find it to be a very cute and innocent character and to see it die is very sad, harsh, violent and disturbing.
NUMBER 4
"B MOVIE SHOW"
This is my all time favorite song in the film since it's a horror themed song and boy is this number is scary as hell. The song is sung by very scary looking appliances including a scary Peter Lorre hang lamp again voiced by Phil Hartman with a great impersonation and a female reel to reel machine with wheels as it's boobs (I'm not getting into that). The song has a very scary and horrifying tone and atmosphere and to be honest that's what I think is so awesome about it. I even love it's horror references. The number itself is dark and gritty, there's very scary shadows of horror and Halloweenish images, plugs come out of nowhere and grab our heroes and lift up these horrifying characters and there's an appliance created with many different appliance parts which is no doubt a reference to the monster in "Frankenstein". Now for appliances that say there is no escape, not only do they break out easily, but how does the costumer standing by the front desk not even notice a bunch of appliances breaking out, or hell, not even hear the door being broken down? I know its part of the joke, but I find it hard to buy, but anyway I digress. Getting back to the song, it gives me chills every time I watch it and it just keeps getting more and more awesome every time I watch it or hear it.
NUMBER 3
THE EVIL MAGNET
The Magnet at the junkyard is the films primary villain and boy is it really villainous and terrifying. The Magnet is like the Grim Reaper mixed with the Terminator, it picks up things and brings them to their death by being crushed and turned into little blocks. It has no remorse, no emotion, "It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with and it will never stop, ever until you are dead!". That evil face and it's humming noise is so scary and eerie that I'd be running away from it too if it was after me. It's scariest moments is when it casts a shadow resembling the masters and it's face slowly disappearing. The scene when it sends the master on the conveyor belt to be crushed is the most intense scene in the movie and the suspense no matter how many times I watch it, just builds and builds. The Magnet is a villain you can run from but you can never hide from it.
NUMBER 2
WORTHLESS
While being very catchy, it's really a very depressing song and is actually the most depressing moment in the film. We see scared, sad and innocent broken down singing cars who are sent to their death by the evil Magnet. That alone is depressing but there's more to it. The song is basically about the cars singing about their good times, before being tossed aside and no longer caring to live again and only within seconds will each car with their solo and story will be sent to be crushed. Watching this scene is not only sad but it's also hard to watch or leave the number feeling happy. The cars once again are being killed one by one and their death is just as gruesome as the Blenders death. Unlike the Blender who we saw get killed in the shadows, we actually see most of these cars getting crushed and turned into little tiny blocks and as they get crushed we see their car parts falling everywhere which are their blood and guts. Again we know very little about these characters but seeing them get crushed before our very own eyes is still very sad, depressing and disturbing. If that's not enough, a sad looking truck actually commits suicide HOW MESSED UP IS THAT?! The song also has a few suggestive material. While the character TV is being humorous in between the number, he pulls out a picture with a nearly topless girl which was later changed to a woman wearing bra. The Suffer Car, no matter which version you hear has a sexual innuendo lyric. This number is violent, suggestive, depressing and most of all disturbing and while being all that, it's still a really awesome. By the way, since members of Pixar did this film, I wonder if they got the inspiration from "Cars" through this?
AND THE NUMBER 1 MOST DISTURBING MOMENT FROM "THE BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER" IS...
THE CLOWN DREAM
This whole sequence serves no purpose in the plot what so ever and it's only purpose is to scare the living daylights out of us and makes us crap our pants and to most of us who've seen this movie, this is the moment that scares us and disturbs us the most! It all starts out all cutesy wootesy with the young master using the Toaster and playing with it when all of a sudden the Toaster is smoking and the smoke takes the form of a giant hand, grabs the master and takes him away. That alone is terrifying but it gets worse. Fire appears and a giant scary clown dressed up as a fireman with a devilish smile, puts his face on the whole screen and says only one word with it's dark soft spoken voice as smoke slowly comes out of it's mouth. Watching that moment still scares me, however, there is more. The Toaster runs away, the Clown squirts water out of it's hose, a giant wave turns into giant sharp forks and suddenly the Toaster is hanging above a bathtub being plugged in as we hear the clowns demolish and all time scary laugh and the Toaster falls in and dies. OH MY FREAKING GOD, LORD ALL MIGHTY, THIS SCENE IS THE MOST SCARIEST SCENE TO EVER BE PUT INTO A KIDS FILM! It's violent, it's dark, it's trippy, it's surreal, it has really scary imagery, it's horrifying and to have all take place after a cute scene is more scary, messed up and disturbing then you realize! This was the scene in the film where I wanted to avoid the film as far away as I could as a kid and seeing this scene as an adult it's no wonder why. This scene has scared millions of viewers and I'm sure the amount of frightened viewers will keep increasing.
Those are the Top 10 Disturbing Moments From "The Brave Little Toaster". I hope you got a kick out of it and who knows maybe I'll do more scary moments from other kids films.
