Well it's the month of Christmas and I've decided every month of December I'm going to review 12 Christmas films, Disney films (I'll explain why later), TV Christmas specials and other holiday related Specials and films from the 14th to the 25th. It could be a feature film, a short, or a TV special. I'm not going to go in order on which is best or worse, it's going to be a random pick, but I will however, review an adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" on Christmas Day. So lets get started!
CHRISTMAS COMES, BUT ONCE A YEAR
This is a short cartoon starring the classic cartoon character Grampy.
For those who don't know Grampy, I'll give you a quick introduction to the character. Grampy is an old man who invents stuff out of things he can find just laying around. He uses his inventions to help people and make life easier. Whenever there's a bad situation or before he invents something, he puts on his thinking cap to think of what to do. When he gets an idea, the light bulb on his cap would blink, and he would shout "I got it!" and start working. Now that you know the character, lets talk about the cartoon.
The cartoon takes place at an "Orphanage". In the opening we see Orphan children (Who for some reason don't have an adult watching them or working the place) wake up on Christmas morning and find presents. Sadly the presents are all used gifts and they break easily. This whole opening is very sad because not only do we see heartbroken children, but the sad part is this is actually happening to Orphan children around the world. Instead of people giving away fresh new gifts, they usually give away old use and broken ones and the reactions on the kids faces in this cartoon is probably the same reaction Orphan kids react on Christmas, while we get our brand new presents. It's a very sad opening.
That all changes when Grampy appears. As he hears the children cry, he decides to bring them Christmas. He does it by making toys out of stuff he finds lying around and dresses up as Santa Claus, while providing them a Christmas tree (That he made) and an indoor winter wonderland. Grampy in this cartoon is just as funny and clever as he is in his cartoons. The toys that he makes out of junk is really clever; he always brings in a good laugh in every scene he's in; and on top of it, he even looks and acts like Santa Claus. The ending scene with him and the children is so touching that it truly brings the meaning of Christmas. The song "Christmas Comes But Once A Year" is a very catchy Christmas tune and once you hear it, it will never leave your head. The animation is very nice, especially in the last scene when they're all together singing in front of a Christmas tree, it just gives you that subtle Christmas feeling.
What really makes this short stick out is the moral. It really shows how badly children are in need of gifts and support on Christmas and if Grampy didn't show up, their Christmas would be terrible and sad. In other words, it's teaching us to lift out our hearts and give to children in need, not used old items, give them something fresh and new or something you never opened. If Grampy can take time out of his Christmas to give and make Orphan kids happy, so can you. Remember, it doesn't have to be Orphan children, it can also be sick children in your local hospital or poor people who are in need. Only you have the power to make a person have a Merry Christmas.
This cartoon definitely shows the meaning of Christmas, and I highly recommend you see it.
RATING 5/5
R.I.P TO THE CHILDREN THAT WERE KILLED TODAY
