PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

Pee-Wee freaking Herman, one of the funniest characters of all time. He's appeared on David Letterman lots of times; was in a funny movie that debuted one of my favorite directors Tim Burton; had a hit kids show; and scared people with his anti drug promo. Since it's the Holiday Season, I thought it would be best to review...

From his hit show "Pee Wees Playhouse", Pee-Wee had a Christmas special. The special stars Pee-Wee and hid friends with a bunch of special guests. I used to watch this as a kid and now I think its time to review this little piece of nostalgia. ON WITH THE REVIEW...

Our special opens up with the Marines singing in great harmony and once they're done singing, Pee-Wee pops out, shouting "Christmas", and everyone begins to dance and two girls stand by Pee-Wee. I just love how everything starts out normal and then goes crazy once Pee-Wee comes in, it's a fun way to open the special. I also love in one scene when one of the Marines accidentally hits Pee-Wee with his hat, while he's singing and if you look carefully you can see an annoyed face on Pee-Wee. It's a great opening and introduction.

Now Pee-Wee in this special is tons of fun to watch (As usual). Every scene he's in, he's always a hoot; he breaks the fourth wall; cracking jokes; acting crazy; laughing hysterically; and as always there's never a dull or unfunny moment with him. One of the best jokes in the special is the running joke where Pee-Wee keeps getting Fruit Cakes as a gift from his friends, it's not only a running joke, but it leads up to one clever gag. I also love that Pee-Wee keeps saying how good he is when he's really greedy; being mean to some of his special guests; and keeps forgetting the important things to do for his playhouse. He even acts selfish around Santa and even yells at him for a moment. In the end, he does redeem himself and of course he always keeps a happy, comedic attitude to the viewers watching this.

Now what about Pee-Wee's friends, do they deliver the same fun as Pee-Wee, that's a yes. His Playhouse friends and neighbors are all there and most of them play a great part in the special. Conky the robot, helps make Pee-Wee's extremely long Christmas wish; Magic Screen takes Pee-Wee to a Christmas wonderland; Randy is trying to ruin Christmas; The food in Pee-Wee's refrigerator are celebrating Christmas; Penny talks about her Christmas; Pee-Wee's dummy Billy Baloney tries to take over the show; the Dinosaur family celebrate Chanuka; and Jambi decorates the playhouse and gives Pee-Wee an extra wish. The rest of his playhouse friends just basically just show up and the only playhouse friends we don't see are the Ants, even though Pee-Wee said they're in this episode. His neighbors also bring a lot of Christmas cheer. Miss Yvonne has mistletoe on her Christmas hairdo; Reba the mail lady delivers a big box; Ricardo gives Pee-Wee a pinata to celebrate Christmas like in Mexico; Mrs.Renee provides the Chaunka portion of the special; Cowboy Curtis helps Pee-Wee build a snowman; and the King of Cartoons lets one of Pee-Wee's special guest present the cartoon for the special. For those who are wondering what the secret word and what the cartoon is, the secret word is "Year"(Which by the way, I'll right scream whenever I type that word) and the cartoon is "Christmas Comes But Once A Year"(Which, I already reviewed to start the countdown).

Now let's talk about his special guests. While most of them are showing their talent or fun to watch, some of them just make a pointless appearance and do nothing. Lets start with the musical guests. First, we have Grace Jones who performs a funky version of the "Little Drummer Boy" and Pee-Wee does a little bit of his famous dance with her, however, Grace Jones looks and performance is a little suggestive to a young audience. Then we have the Del Rubio Triplettes singing "Winter Wonderland" in great harmony; K.D. Lang singing "Jingle Bell Rock" with lots of energy; Charo sings a beautiful version of "Feliz Navidad"; and Dinah Shore sings an extended version of the "12 Days Of Christmas". The special guests that appear the most in the special is that beach couple Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon who Pee-Wee treats them as slaves instead of guests and yes Annette does make a "Mickey Mouse Club" reference. The other guests appear that show up and look like they're having a fun time, even if they don't show their true talents are Little Richard, Magic Johnson and Cher. The rest of the guests are just short pointless cameos from Oprah, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Whoopi Goldberg, and Joan Rivers.

The special has a really beautiful and Christmas feel conclusion. They decorate a beautiful Christmas Tree; Christmas Carols are sung; Randy learns the true meaning of Christmas; and Pee-Wee makes a very tough decision, but gets rewarded for it in the end. Santa Claus in this special is one of the best Santa Claus's I ever seen. He's jolly, he's humble, he's full of the Christmas spirit, and he jokes around a bit with Pee-Wee. It's really a good finale to the special.

This is a really great Christmas special, it's a lot of fun, very enjoyable, has the Christmas feel and is something I usually watch every year (Scream).

RATING 5/5
