MY 12TH FAVORITE MOVIE VILLAIN

 MR. BLONDE  (MICHAEL MADSEN)

FROM "RESERVOIR DOGS"

WARNING: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS!

Alright a lot can argue that everybody in the film is a bad guy except for Mr. Orange, but like a lot of gangster films, we spend so much time with these characters that we forget they’re bad guys despite the fact that everything they’re doing is Illegal. Mr. Blonde on the other hand is the only one in the group that’s a Psycho and kills people because he loves to kill. The rest of the people in the film are professionals, meaning they only kill people only if it’s necessary. Throughout the film, Mr. Blonde kills innocent civilians when the alarm goes off during the diamond heist (Off-Screen); torturers a cop because he loves torturing people; cuts off the cops ear and tries to burn the cop ALIVE!

In the beginning of the film when we first see him, he’s like everybody at the table in the diner scene. Talking about stuff; layin back; smoking cigarettes; but right after the heist, we don’t see him (until later on in the film) but we hear Mr. White and Mr. Pink talk about what a sick manic he is after killing all those innocent people and almost killing Mr. White. When he finally appears at the warehouse (Hide-out) he’s layin back (Just like in the opening of the film); wearing his shades; drinking his soda; and casually saying “F—k EM, they set off the alarm they deserve what they got”. As the film goes on he’s just basically a cool guy, lookin cool, talking cool, and takes a cop hostage just so Mr. White and Mr. Pink can get answers on who set up them at the robbery. Everybody likes him, The Boss likes him, The Bosses son likes him, and even Mr. Pink likes him despite what he did during the robbery.

Finally when the characters leave to dump the stolen getaway cars, we’re left alone with the cop, a wounded passed out Mr. Orange, and Mr. Blonde and we find out his true nature right in front of our eyes. Tell me if this speech doesn’t sound cold blooded and psychotic to you “Listen kid I’m not going to Bulls—t you but, I don’t give a F—K what you know or don’t know. I’m gonna torturer you anyway, regardless. Not to get information. It’s amusing to me to torture a cop. You can say anything you want cause I heard it all before. All you can do is pray for a quick death, which you ain’t gonna get”. Then turns on the radio and tortures the poor guy while dancing to “Stuck in the middle with you” by Steelers Wheel. One of the many reasons why I love the character is mostly everything he holds he just throws them aside. Now some can argue that Joe Pesci as Tommy from “Goodfellas” and James Cagney from “The Public Enemy” or “White Heat” are more psychopathic than him, but here’s the thing, just like what I said at the beginning, we spend so much time with these guys we forget their bad guys and when they die we feel bad for them, despite all the evil crimes they did throughout the film. Mr. Blonde on the other hand, when he dies we don’t feel bad for him because he’s one of the main reasons why the robbery became a “Bullet Festival” and tortures people for his own amusement, while with Cagney and Pesci, it's just out of revenge and anger.

There some scenes that hint him of being a psycho like in the beginning when he jokingly asks his boss if he wants him to shoot Mr. White for stealing his book for example. He also says to the cop “I don’t have a boss, nobody tells me what to do.” Despite that he did four years in prison for his Boss and not making a deal no matter what it was, I think he’s just working with them because he wants something from them, you can even tell by the smile on his face (In a flashback scene when he’s talking to his boss) that he’s only with them for something. The character of Mr. Blonde was so powerful that audiences were walking out of the theaters because of his madness. Even the actor himself had trouble playing the character when he was doing the “Ear Scene”. In fact, if you listen carefully when you hear the cop say (An Improvised line) “Please, I Got a little kid!” you can hear the actor off screen out of character asking to stop the take. I’m actually surprised that the actor himself had trouble playing the character.

Years and years later Michael Madsen was the only one to lend his voice and likeness to the game version of the film. I’m not saying it’s a good game but its defiantly playable especially if you’re a fan of the film; just don’t expect it to be a “Grand Theft Auto” type of game. Mr. Blonde may look like a professional on the outside, but he’s psycho at heart.
